3 Ways to Make a Difference on Earth Day (and Every Day)

April 04, 2019

Life on this earth is complicated. On the one hand, technology and innovation have allowed us to create wonders we couldn’t have even imagined a hundred years ago. While on the other hand, those same amazing things that make our lives so convenient today can have a seriously negative impact on our planet. So, what can we do to help protect the earth? The truth is that we can do quite a bit. With small changes throughout your day, you can really make a difference! In celebration of Earth Day, here are a few ways you can lessen your environmental impact.

Be Aware of Your Water Usage

Water is a finite resource. We’re blessed enough in many countries to feel that it’s everywhere, but every drop you use is important. Be aware of your water usage throughout the day. Don’t use this an excuse to get away from your hydration goals, but think through small things you can change about your day to conserve water. Be mindful of the amount of time you’re in the shower, don’t leave the tap running while you brush your teeth, rethink the number of times you wash your car, stay away from using too much water when doing laundry and dishes, and ditch your lawn. Replanting your front and backyard using hardier plants (or rock features) that don’t require a large amount of water will go a long way to helping to reduce your water waste.

 Make a Friend and Carpool

On top of being a great way to save money and make new friends, carpooling is another way to help lessen your impact on the environment. According to the EPA, “A typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.” And that’s just one car! Taking public transportation or setting up a carpool cuts down on the number of cars on the road, which cuts carbon emissions and lowers air pollution, which both helps the earth and our lungs.

 Avoid Single Use Items

Single-use plastic is convenient, rampant, and deadly. According to Ocean Crusaders, it’s believed that there are currently “...5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean.” And that number continues to grow and threaten sea life across the world. This includes straws, water bottles, and plastic bags, but it also crops up in places you might not be as quick to recognize. Rethink to-go containers at your favorite restaurants and coffee places, purchase in bulk using cloth bags or other reusable containers, carry your own silverware so that you aren’t stuck using plastic. Each and every one of those tiny decisions all contribute to a larger change.

 Adding it All Up

These may seem like small changes, but they all add up.

Still, while we all individually need to do our part to make better choices, saving the earth is bigger than just one person. We need environmentally conscious businesses to help fill the gap.

At Truth Alone, sustainability is one of our fundamental guiding principles. We use recycled and recyclable materials in our packaging, all of our component material for trimming and packaging are locally sourced, we use handpicked organic Peruvian Pima cotton, which uses 90% less water than conventional cotton, and we utilize fair trade labor practices in everything that we do. Would life be easier if we didn’t make some of these choices? Perhaps, but we’re dedicated to making our planet better, and ensuring that we’re good stewards of this stunning jewel of a planet we’re all lucky enough to call home.
