What is Organic Pima Cotton (and why should you care)?

There are a few things we do every day as human beings; we eat, we drink, and we get dressed. It’s that last part that we’re talking about here. When it comes to eating and drinking, we know that what we put in our bodies can make a big difference in how we feel and our long-term health. We also know those choices can have a significant impact on the health of the planet. We believe strongly that what you put on your body should be just as good for you and the earth as what you put in your body.

If you look at the tag in your shirt; you’ll see that it’s made from any number of fabrics, from silk to many blended fibers to polyester. There are many kinds of types of fabric to choose from, and while all of them have their pros and cons, today we’re taking a closer look at cotton. Because we’re firm believers that selecting the right type of cotton (organic Peruvian Pima cotton to be exact) is key to making life so much better.

 Cotton is Cotton, Right?

Not so fast! Cotton seems simple, but there are three different lengths of cotton fiber alone. The length of the cotton fiber itself shuffles them into different categories. There’s short staple, long-staple, and extra-long staple cotton. Staple length has a dramatic impact on the quality and durability of the cotton. Typically, if you see 100% cotton on a tag, it’s a blend of short-staple cotton that’s been spun together. If the tag calls out the staple length, then you know it’s a higher end cotton, but even there you can get a wide range of quality.

The cotton that stands head and shoulders above the rest is Pima. We especially love organic Peruvian Pima cotton because it is rare. It is considered the world’s best cotton. It’s naturally hypoallergenic, fantastically smooth & soft, pill-resistant, lustrous, and super durable. To make sure our Pima cotton is both the highest quality and sustainable we only use organic Peruvian Pima cotton in our line of men’s and women’s line of timeless essentials.

What Makes Truth Alone’s Organic Pima Cotton Different?

What sets the Pima cotton we use ahead of the pack? We use extra-long staple Peruvian Organic Pima Cotton from Bergman Rivera, pioneers in the production and promotion of Organic Cotton Textiles in Peru since 1986. The Pima cotton they grow supports more than 160 families across three different valleys in Peru.

Bergman Rivera’s cotton is hand-picked and grown organically, which is good for the soil, the people, the plants, your body and the world itself. They are the first company in Latin America to be certified under Global Organic Textile Standard (G.O.T.S). The GOTS certification guarantees the traceability of their organic cotton, and we’re proud to support a company that is taking these important steps to help preserve the planet and bring truth to fashion.

We design our timeless essentials to be well - timeless. We believe organic Pima cotton is key to achieving that goal. What do you think? Have you experienced the Peruvian organic Pima cotton difference? Tell us about it on Instagram!
